We’ve all seen butterfingers users whose device falls to the floor on a seemingly daily or weekly basis. Those people might have a little less to worry about going forward. Corning has unveiled the Gorilla Glass 6, emphasizing that it’s more durable than its previous models. In this generation of the Gorilla Glass, the composition has been amended to better survive multiple drops without breaking.
The company says that the glass will survive up to 15 drops from a meter height. That’s up to two times better than the Gorilla Glass 5. Supposedly it is much better than rivals whose glass might not even make it through the first fall.
“Corning Gorilla Glass 6 improves upon Gorilla Glass 5 by surviving drops from higher heights, but, more importantly, has been engineered to survive multiple drops,” John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning.
The sixth generation of Gorilla Glass shall also withstand drops from “higher heights”. Corning hasn’t talked about improvements to scratch resistance though. This means that you shouldn’t expect your phone to look as pristine as it did before the fall. So although the company claims the new generation of Gorilla Glass is “better,” you shouldn’t expect new phones made with the glass to be more scratch-resistant.

The caution on Corning’s site claims that the glass’s actual, real-world performance shall differ from what happens in the lab. Smartphone manufacturers can also request a thinner version, or a specific shape, that might reduce some of its resilience.
The glass is already in production and is available to smartphone makers. You probably won’t see Corning’s new display-protection until sometime in 2019. Although Corning does not disclose names of its clients, we may expect the flagships of second-half to feature it. It should be a welcome addition, though. Now that many phones have glass backs, curved displays or both, the strength of that glass is more likely to affect the durability of the entire design.
