Google introduced the ‘Automatic Wi-Fi wake-up’ feature with Android 8.0 Oreo for the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. Google Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P owners will remember the disappointment when getting the official Android 8.0 Oreo update without that feature. The feature turns on Wi-Fi automatically to connect to high-quality saved networks. However, a new report by XDAdevelopers states that it will be available as default in all devices running stock Android 9 Pie.

The Wi-Fi wakeup feature utilizes Wi-Fi scanning feature located in the location services settings to detect all the nearby Wi-Fi networks in the background. If the algorithm, while scanning, is able to find a trusted and high-quality network, it will automatically turn on the device’s Wi-Fi and connect to it.

The Wi-Fi uses very less battery of your smartphone. So even if your Wi-Fi is kept on, it won’t affect the battery of your device. This feature won’t affect the battery as it would consume very less battery which can be neglected, as well.

This feature was even present in Android Oreo but it was not available for all devices. Now developers have been very modest and they have enabled this feature for all devices such that you will be able to connect to a high-quality saved network without turning your Wi-Fi On. You can even find this option in settings:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Network and Security
  3. Tap on Wi-Fi
  4. Wi-Fi Preferences
  5. Turn ON the Wi-Fi automatically
  6. Done

Wi-Fi Wakeup Feature

With the launch of Android Pie and disclosure of its source code by the developers, we could spot some changes including this feature. However, you’ll now notice there is no ‘turn on WiFi automatically’ feature in its source code. But the good thing is that it has a ‘WiFi Automatic wake-up’ feature which is a default.
