The Huawei Mate 20 Pro arrived at our office two days ago and I have been using it ever since. It has been exactly 48 hours since I got the Mate 20 Pro and to be honest I am having a hard time putting it down. Before I start gushing over the phone, let’s talk about its unboxing experience.

The Mate 20 Pro comes in some simple yet elegant packaging! The box is black in color with the name of the product along with the Leica Triple Camera labeled on top. Popping off the lid, you are immediately greeted by the phone itself in all of its glory. Let’s keep it to the side for a while! And removing the plastic diver, we get another smaller box containing the sim-ejector tool, the user manual, and a cover. Tossing them to the side, the next item inside the box is a Supercharger brick. They are followed by a USB Type-C cable, an earphone, and a 3.5mm to USB Type-C dongle.

Going back to the phone, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro looks absolutely stunning. Peeling off the protective plastic the first thing that I noticed was the textured glass back. The rear of Mate 20 Pro has a subtle pattern which makes it easy to grip on. A clever way to make a glass backed phone less slippery. The next thing that I noticed was how thin and light the phone was. After using the bulky Note9, the sleek design of the Mate 20 Pro is a welcomed change.

Something that immediately jumped at me is the display of the phone! Huawei has adopted an edge display with a pretty noticeable curve. Some might find it a bit obnoxious but me personally, I actually like it. The infamous notch makes a return residing on the top center of the display. Huawei, however, has cut its losses by offering a narrower bezel than before. The Mate 20 Pro has an impressive 87.9% screen-to-body ratio! And the display itself is a pretty good one at that. The Mate 20 Pro packs a 6.39 inches Quad-HD AMOLED display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. And let me tell you how amazing it looks! It offers great colors, viewing angles, and brightness levels. Truly impressed with the panel.

Othe specs of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro are as follows:

  • Display: 6.39-inch AMOLED display with Gorilla Glass protection
  • Resolution: Quad-HD+ display (1440× 3120)
  • Aspect Ratio: 19.5:9 aspect ratio, 538 PPI
  • Software: EMUI 9.0 based on Android 9.0 Pie
  • Processor: HiSilicon Kirin 980 (7nm)
  • GPU: Mali G76 MP10
  • RAM: 6GB
  • Storage: 128GB with support for Nano memory (NM) card slot up to 256GB
  • Rear Camera: f/1.8 40MP (wide), f/2.2 20MP (ultra-wide), f/2.4 8MP (telephoto)
  • Front Camera: f/2.0 24MP
  • Sensors: Fingerprint (in-display), Face ID, accelerometer, gyro, proximity, barometer, compass
  • Battery: 4200mAh with Supercharge technology (40W fast charging), Wireless Fast charging and reverse wireless charging

With all these specs the Huawei Mate 20 Pro performs exceptionally. During the 2 day period, the performance of the phone has been quite good. The phone is extremely smooth yet very powerful. And man oh man, the in-display fingerprint scanner is amazing. I never thought it would be this blazing fast. The inner child in me still thinks of it as some kind of a magic trick. Super impressed with it!

The cameras on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro are also quite meticulous. Although I have not had the chance to test it thoroughly, the random snaps that I took came out to be great. The wide angle lens is a useful inclusion over the Monochrome sensor from the previous generations. I will cover the camera more vigorously in our full in-depth review of the phone. On initial impression though, I am impressed with the camera offerings of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

And finally, the battery life of the phone has been great. The 4,200mAh non-user removable battery held up quite well during the 2 days time period. Something that is new and useful with the phone is the reverse wireless charging. Yes, folks! the Mate 20 Pro can wirelessly charge other compatible phones. I mean, how cool is that! I tested it out on my Samsung Galaxy Note9 and it works like a charm. A convenient way to share some precious photons with your friends or, if you are like me, with your other devices.
