The long-awaited iPhone X has been unveiled by Apple on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the device. The other two variants of the device, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus were also unveiled at the same event.
Apple with its new flagship has introduced an iPhone with an all screen display. The 5.8-inch front screen melts into a highly polished curved-edge stainless steel band that encircles a durable all-glass body. iPhone X incorporates an OLED display, the first in an iPhone, also referred to as the “Super Retina Display” with a resolution of 2436× 1125 pixels.
Apple says it has solved problems with brightness and color accuracy that sometimes plagued OLED screens in the past, and has added Dolby Vision and HDR10 support for stunning video playback. Apple has introduced facial recognition in the iPhone X, which it calls Face ID, in order to unlock the phone. Apple’s True Depth camera system lets users unlock their phone by simply looking at it. Facial recognition technology replaces Touch ID as a way to identify users through an infrared camera.
The iPhone X’s camera has a dual-lens 12-megapixel rear camera, with dual optical image stabilization, made up of a wide-angle f/1.8 aperture lens and a telephoto f/2.4 aperture lens. The 7-megapixel front camera now supports Portrait mode and has auto image stabilization and exposure control. Apple’s new image signal processor provides advanced pixel processing and a new color filter. Both cameras use the new Natural Lighting effect introduced on the iPhone 8, and the new augmented reality features. Video has also been improved with 4K resolution movies at 60fps now possible, plus slow-motion video at 240fps.
Inside the iPhone X will be an A11 bionic chip, a more powerful chip than the one found on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The iPhone X will also provide two more hours of battery life than the iPhone 7, according to Apple. iPhone X has also incorporated the wireless charging option which already has been adopted by Samsung in its past few devices. The iPhone X has been used to showcase some of the augmented reality experiences that Apple debuted with its ARKit software.
Augmented reality feature allows the iPhone users to superimpose virtual images, games, and videos onto real-world objects and is a field where Apple has truly taken the initiative from rivals such as Google. Apple has also introduced a feature in iPhone X, named Anamoji, which is a new form of moving emoji that can be customized using a facial recognition software. Users can scan their face and the anamoji will match their expression in a short animation.
Apple has announced that iPhone X’s pre-order will begin on 27 October, with shipping to begin 3 November. The iPhone X will be made available in 64GB and 256GB configurations, which will fetch $999 and $1449, respectively.
