For a smartphone brand to launch two flagship phones in a year doesn’t always work. Often, the successor doesn’t have enough new tech to make for a meaningful upgrade. OnePlus has been following the two phones per year schedule since the 3T in 2016. However, the company is never committed to making its T series of devices a regular thing.
According to OnePlus, they’ll only make T series when technology has progressed enough. They will work on T series only when it’s imperative to improve on a handset before the next generation. On 29th of October, they launched the 2018’s second flagship, the OnePlus 6T. It is the incarnation of that rationale, as it feels like a genuine step up from the OnePlus 6, which launched earlier this year. There aren’t any eye-catching new features, but it is a stepping stone on the way to the OnePlus 7.
Similar Design
OnePlus has embroidered its design credentials a good deal in the last couple of iterations of flagships. The OnePlus 6 was a great-looking device and the 6T isn’t much different to that. In fact, there are only some few worthwhile changes which are also well implemented. Like the OnePlus 6, the body of 6T is also glass on both the front and back.
With dimensions of 157.5 x 74.8 x 8.2mm, the OnePlus 6T is not a large device. On the rear side, you’ll now see just the two-sensor camera and a small flash below it. Otherwise, the back of the phone is empty, which contributes to that comfortable feel in the hand.
On the right side of the phone is a power on button and above that is the signature OnePlus slider that allows you to mute your phone with a quick flick. On the left side is the volume rocker and on the bottom of the phone is the USB-C port, flanked by two speakers for stereo audio.
Similar Display with a new notch cutout
There’s still a notch in the OnePlus 6T unlike the recently announced Mi Mix 3. However, it’s about 75% smaller than the predecessor. OnePlus calls it a teardrop notch. We would like to see the notch gone completely, but whatsoever, this is a step in the right direction. It also allows OnePlus to cram in a larger Full HD+ 6.41-inch optic AMOLED display. The aspect ratio of the display is, now, 19.5:9 with 1080x2340p resolution. OnePlus has also improved the brightness on its displays for better viewing outdoors.
In-Display Fingerprint Sensor
The back of the phone is relatively clear, as you will no longer see the fingerprint scanner there. The removal of the 3.5mm jack allowed OnePlus to equip the 6T with an in-display fingerprint sensor. The 6T’s fingerprint sensor is removed from its backside to the display section below. The company claims that the new sensor is the fastest in the industry with an unlock time of about 0.34 seconds.
No more headphone jack
In 2018, we’ve seen many brands removing the 3.5mm headphone jack just like Apple. OnePlus was one of the few remaining brands that continued to outfit its devices with the legacy port. But finally, OnePlus has gotten rid of the headphone jack.
According to the company, this allowed them to increase the size of the resonance chamber on its internal speakers. It also helped them make room for new components without having to increase the phone size much.
Pretty much the same camera
On the rear, the OnePlus 6T offers 16MP and 20MP f/1.7 sensors that perform very similarly to the OnePlus 6. The main 16MP shooter has OIS and EIS. However, the real change comes down to software. OnePlus is introducing improved HDR and portrait modes, a new studio lighting modes that recognize faces and adjust lighting to simulate professional lighting, and a new Nightscape Mode.
Google recently added a new Night Sight feature for Pixel phones that drastically improves low-light photos. OnePlus, in an attempt to build its own version, ships the 6T with its take on this called “Nightscape.” The Nightscape Mode is designed to capture low-light urban environments with improved clarity, less noise, more accurate color reproduction, and better dynamic range.
Also new is Studio Lighting. It is OnePlus’s take on the iPhone’s Portrait Lighting. The company says that they worked with photographer Kevin Abosch on this feature. This feature will recognize faces and adjust the lighting accordingly to simulate professional lightning.
Same specs under the hood
Powering the OnePlus 6T is the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset as the OnePlus 6. Depending on the model, you get either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. This time, OnePlus is also ditching the 64GB storage variant. They will, now, only offer the phone with either 128GB or 256GB of onboard storage.
More Battery Life
Since the OnePlus 5, the company has paired 3,300mAh batteries with its every phone. The OnePlus 6T packs a 3,700mAh battery which is overdue an upgrade here. The OnePlus 6 already had a good battery life, but better battery performance is always welcomed. The company’s Fast Charge (earlier known as Dash Charge) also makes a return here. You can, now, quickly top off your phone in the event you run a little low.
Latest OxygenOS with Android Pie
The OnePlus 6 has already received the Android Pie update via an OTA update. The OnePlus 6T features the latest OxygenOS updates as well. This update includes improved navigation gestures and an updated Gaming mode with floating icons that make it easy to see notifications at a glance.
Probably the biggest update on the software side is the new Smart Boost mode. This feature stores app data in memory to minimize the boot time. This should result in much faster app launches. OnePlus claims that you could see an improvement in the range of 5%-25% depending on the app.
OnePlus 6T Price in Nepal
The OnePlus 6T will be available in Nepal starting from 11th of November. The phone will be exclusively sold from Daraz’s 11.11 Sales Day. At launch, the OnePlus 6T is only available in two colors — Midnight Black and Mirror Black. These are the exact same finishes that were available for the OnePlus 6, with the former featuring a matte finish while the latter has a glossy coating. It is very likely that OnePlus will offer additional colors later on down the road.
The OnePlus 6T price is set to $549 for the 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage variant in the Mirror Black color. The same storage and color but with 8GB of RAM will cost you $579. Midnight Black versions of the phone have 8GB of RAM and cost $579 for the 128GB variant and $629 for the 256GB variant. The price in Nepal is expected to be somewhat similar to the OnePlus 6.
