Oppo has launched yet another mid-tier smartphone, the Oppo A71 (2018) in China. The phone, as the name suggests, is the follow up to 2017’s A71. The phone now offers better specs, premium design, and an all-new A.I. powered selfie camera. That said, does the phone justify the price tag of $179? Well, let’s take a deeper look at the phone and find out for ourselves.

The Oppo A71 (2018) packs a 5.2 inch HD (720×1280) IPS display with a pixel density of 282PPI. The display is edged out by a 2.5D glass giving users a seamless experience. Encasing the internals of the phone is a metallic shell which not only looks good but also feels good in the hands. Under the hood, the A71 (2018) packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor along with the Adreno 506 GPU. The processor is, now, backed by 2GB of RAM which is a gig less than its predecessor. Additionally, the phone comes with 16GB of internal storage with support for memory expansion via a micro-sd card up to 256GB. The phone also supports dual sim-cards and is 4G capable.

In the camera department, just like the Oppo A83, the phone packs an A.I. backed 5MP selfie camera. It utilizes Artificial Intelligence to give that extra oomph to your selfies. The A71 (2018) also has a f/2.2 13MP rear camera accompanied by an LED flash. Moving on, at the software front, the phone runs ColorsOS 3.2UI based on Android 7.1 Nougat. Sadly, this time around too, the phone doesn’t come with a fingerprint reader. It, however, packs other sensors like an accelerometer, a proximity sensor, and a digital compass. And finally, powering the device all up is a 3000mAh non-user removable battery. This coupled with the 720p display will be enough to get users through a day of usage on a single charge without any issues.

The Oppo A71 (2018) looks to be a decent mid-tier smartphone. That said, the lower RAM capacity, lack of a fingerprint scanner, and a mere HD display is something that we can’t overlook at this price point. There are rumors that the phone will soon be launched in Nepal for an estimated price of around Rs 20,000. That is a heck of a lot to pay for a phone that has so less to offer!
