Samsung Galaxy S10+ vs Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Samsung recently unveiled its latest S10 series of smartphones at its Unpacked event held in San Francisco. In the event, Samsung unveiled 5 new smartphones namely the Galaxy S10e, S10, S10+, S10 5G, and the Galaxy Fold. Among the five, the most powerful yet commercially available smartphone, the Galaxy S10+ caught my eye. It is the best smartphone that Samsung has to offer that you can buy right now.

But with a starting price of $1000 is it the best smartphone you can buy for the price? Well, to find out just that we put the phone against the best smartphone of 2018, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. Let’s see what differences do these two phones have, at least on paper.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ vs Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Design & Display: Samsung Galaxy S10+ vs Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Both the Samsung Galaxy S10+ and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro are two of the hottest looking smartphones available in the market right now. They both come with glass-on-glass design sandwiched by a metallic frame. Although glass, the S10+ has the same old slippery back while the Mate 20 Pro has a patterned back. This makes gripping the Mate 20 Pro a bit easier! Talking about the color option, the Galaxy S10+ comes in Prism White, Prism Green, Prism Black, Prism Blue, and Canary Yellow. While the Mate 20 Pro has a slew of gradient finish viz, the Emerald Green, Midnight Blue, Twilight, Pink Gold, and the plain old Black. Although the S10+ has some great color variants, I would have loved to see a gradient version. With more and more people wanting a gradient phone, Samsung should have given us at least one option.

There is no arguing, Samsung makes the best displays in the world! And the panel on the Galaxy S10+ is a prime example of that. The 6.4-inch 1440×3040 pixels display with a 19:9 aspect ratio is just that good! It also is HDR10+ compatible which is a huge plus point. Don’t get me wrong, the 6.39 1440×3120 pixels display on the Mate 20 Pro is no slouch. But the panel on the S10+ is just that good!

Both the phone has some kind of appendage, on the top-side of the display, to house the front cameras. The Mate 20 Pro has a full-fledged notch while the S10+ has a punch hole cutout or as Samsung likes to call it, the Infinity-O display. Both the methods of hiding the front snapper are a bit obtrusive in my opinion. You may, however, like one of the two options.

Talking about the cameras, you have to give props to Huawei for pioneering the triple rear camera revolution. They are the ones who made the Tri-camera set up cool! The Samsung Galaxy S10+ now comes with a triple camera set up, just like the Mate 20 Pro. While the set up may seem similar, the differences are huge. The Mate 20 Pro packs an f/1.8 40MP sensor, an f/2.4 8MP telephoto lens, and an f/2.2 20MP ultra-wide sensor. While the Galaxy S10+ comes with an f/1.5-2.4 12MP wide, f/2.4 12MP telephoto, and an f/2.2 16MP ultra-wide lenses.

Moving to the selfie camera, the Mate 20 Pro packs an f/2.0 24MP shooter. While the S10+ has a dual front camera set up made by an f/1.9 10MP and f/2.2 8MP sensors. Both the phones have the top-notch cameras on any smartphone, to date. The DXO Mark rating 0f 109 for both the Mate 20 Pro and the Galaxy S10+ proves just that.

Performance: Samsung Galaxy S10+ vs Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Both the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S10+ are a beast of a phone! They have the latest and greatest specs that a smartphone of 2019 has to offer. The Galaxy S10+ sports the latest Exynos 9820 (8nm) or the Qualcomm SDM855 Snapdragon 855 (7nm) SoC. While the Mate 20 Pro packs an in-house HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor with a 7nm FinFET.

Moving on, both of these phones have a freakishly high amount of RAM and storage. The S10+ comes in a total of three configurations i.e, 1TB memory with 12GB RAM, 128GB memory with 8GB RAM, and 512GB memory with 8GB of RAM. The Mate 20 Pro, on the other hand, comes with 256GB memory with 8GB RAM and 128GB memory with 6GB of RAM options.

One cool feature with the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is the dual-VoLTE technology. It allows you to pick up calls from one SIM when you are actively using another SIM to play games or take calls. It means you don’t need to ignore your girlfriend’s call while playing PUBG with your friends. I mean how cool is that!

And speaking of cool features, the Galaxy S10+ also has one in the form of an ultra-sonic in-display fingerprint scanner. The Mate 20 Pro also has an in-display digit sensor but the ultra-sonic option from Samsung is a bit new and exciting.

Battery: Samsung Galaxy S10+ vs Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Talking about the battery size, the Samsung Galaxy S10+ has a 4100mAh non-user removable battery. While the Mate 20 Pro has a slightly larger 4200mAh non-user removable battery. Both these phones come with a form of Fast Charging Technology. Samsung has its 15W FastBattery Charging tech while Huawei packs its whopping 40W SuperCharge technology.

A feature that Samsung took inspiration from Huawei is the Reverse Wireless Charging. Now you can use both these devices to charge other smartphones if need be. They also come with Fast Wireless Charging which is slowly becoming a standard.

Early Verdict: Samsung Galaxy S10+ vs Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Both the Samsung Galaxy S10+ and the Huawei Mate 20 Pro are top notch devices that have a lot to offer. They both have their strengths and weakness! Not having used the Samsung Galaxy S10+, we can’t pick an actual winner. But one thing we can say for sure is that both these are devices are the cream of the crop. No matter which one you get you will have a great smartphone at hand.

Huawei also is coming up with their P30 series of smartphones which is a direct competitor to the S10 series. The line up is expected to have an even better rear quad-camera set up. The DXO Mark score too is expected to be off the charts, even higher than the S10+. It will be interesting to see how these two stacks up when the P30 series goes official on the 26th of March in Paris.
