The Samsung Galaxy S8 is a work of art! It has set the bar high on how a modern smartphone should look like. Samsung has broken all barriers to create something that is truly beautiful and still very functional. But prices at Rs. 88,900 is it the best smartphone money can buy right now? The major attraction and the crown jewel of the Samsung Galaxy S8 is its infinity display. The 5.8 inches Quad-HD AMOLED display looks absolutely stunning. With an aspect ratio of 18.5:9, the display on the S8 is taller than a typical smartphone. The panel is now ever brighter and supports HDR videos. Samsung, just like the note series, has completely done away with the flat displays in favor of their edge panels. The edge display instead of being there just for aesthetics is somewhat functional in this iteration. It is also not that pronounced as the edge panel found on the Galaxy S7.
This almost bezel-less display comes encased in a metal chassis with a glass back. The tall display coupled with the premium materials makes holding the device easier. The device is also very much usable with just one hand. That said, the glass back makes the phone very slippery and prone to smudges.
Performance
Under the hood, the phone packs an octa-core Exynos 8895 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The internal storage can be further expanded via a micro-sd card up to 256GB. It also does support dual sim cards but only if you give up the micro-sd card slot. Performance-wise, the phone flew through everything I threw at it. I didn’t notice any lags or stutters.
Gaming on this device with the Mali G71 MP-20 GPU and Vulcan API was a breeze. I was easily able to play all the popular titles without any slowdowns or dropped frames. That said, I did feel a lot of heat while gaming on this device. This may, however, be due to the fact that my unit is a pre-production review unit. You may not experience the same problems that I did.
Software
Moving on to the software side of things the phone runs Android 7.0 Nougat with Samsung’s own custom skin overlaid on top of it. This iteration of Samsung’s UX is clean, minimalistic, and most of all still very functional. It packs tons of useful software tweaks like the Always On Display, blue light filter, game launcher, and much more. Bixby, Samsung’s new personal assistant is also here and she is here to stay. So much so that they have decided to give her, her very own button. She also resides on the far left of the home screen which is very reminiscent of Google Now.
Bixby provides some useful information like the weather, news, theme suggestions, video suggestions, and upcoming events among other things. She also learns your habits and likings. Bixby also has another useful function dubbed the ‘Bixby Vision’. This allows her to see through the camera lens and identify what is in front of it. This is quite amazing and a very useful feature to have. But sadly it is not as accurate as I would like it to be especially in regions like Nepal.
Cameras
The Samsung Galaxy S8 packs an f/1.7 12MP front camera with a LED flash and built-in OIS. The pictures taken from the phone are surreal and quite frankly I have blown away by it. The images are a tad sharp and have high details and vibrancy. The phone also has an f/1.7 8MP front camera for all your selfies. Both the cameras perform extremely well even in low light situations. And this time around both of them come with ‘Dual Pixel AF’ for faster and smoother focusing while taking photos and videos.
And just sitting below the rear camera is an awkwardly placed fingerprint scanner which is very accurate. The placement, however, could have been in a better location. Other biometrics options include an Iris scanner which is cool to have but is not that accurate. Me wearing prescribed glasses may have to do a lot with its inaccuracy. There is also a face unlock which works very well and is the best among the three. The phone also has a bottom-firing speaker which is a bit tiny and doesn’t have a lot of bass to it. This may be due to the fact the phone is IP68 rated for dust and water resistance.
Battery
And finally powering the device all up is a 3000mAh non-user removable battery. The battery life on the phone has been good but not great. The Quad-HD display has been a major battery hog. I was able to get 4-5 hours of on-screen time with my light to heavy usage of the phone. Moderate users will be able to get a full day’s worth of battery life out of this phone. And if the battery does run out there is the inclusion of adaptive fast charge and wireless charging.

So to sum it up, the Samsung Galaxy S8 priced at Rs. 88,900 is the best phone in the market right now. It re-defines how a smartphone should look like without sacrificing the functionality. Samsung, however, could have given a little more thought to the speaker and placement of the fingerprint scanner.
