Vivo recently has been impressing the world with its innovative smartphones. From the pop-up selfie camera to the portless design, Vivo has been bringing a lot of new features set to the rather stale smartphone market. One such innovation is the recently launched Vivo V15 Pro. So, what is so special about this phone? Well, the phone has a pop-up selfie camera, an edge-to-edge display, and an in-display fingerprint scanner for a price of just Rs 52,490. But is the phone worth it? Is it the best phone to buy at this price range? Well, let’s find the answer to these questions in this review.
Vivo V15 Pro Review
Design
The Vivo V15 Pro is a gorgeous looking device! Although plastic, the back of the phone gives it a premium look. The gradient finish of the Topaz Blue and Ruby Red further bolsters the wow factor of the V15 Pro. The phone is also comfortable to hold with a dimension of 157.3 x 74.7 x 8.2 mm and a weight of 185 grams. Overall a comfortable phone to use! That said, I do wish that Vivo had given us a glass back instead of a plastic one. For Rs 52,490 a premium-ness of a glass back is a must.
Display
One of the most impressive features of the Vivo V15 Pro is its display. While most phones at the price have either a notch or a punch-hole, the V15 Pro has a full-fledged display at the front. Thanks to the pop-up camera, Vivo has been able to incorporate a 6.39-inch edge-to-edge S-AMOLED display. And let me tell you, the panel looks absolutely amazing. It has an ample amount of brightness with punchy colors just the way I like it. Viewing angle is also great alongside the size of the display. Overall, watching movies, playing games, and browsing through apps has been a pleasant experience on this phone. Absolutely love it!
Performance
The Vivo V15 Pro packs an octa-core Qualcomm SDM675 Snapdragon 675 processor along with the Andreno 612 GPU. The SoC is backed by 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. These combinations make up for quite a well-performing phone. I faced no performance related issue while using the device. Everything was smooth and lag-free just the way it should be.
The gaming performance of the Vivo V15 Pro was absolutely amazing. The Adreno 612 GPU of the phone kicks ass! I was easily able to play heavyweight titles like PUBG Mobile, Asphalt 9, Modern Combat 5 without any hiccups. Needless to say, playing smaller titles will be a breeze on the phone. All in all, the Vivo V15 Pro is a well-performing phone for the price.
Software
The Vivo V15 Pro runs Funtouch OS 9 based on Android 9.0 Pie. Just like previous Funtouch versions, the one on this phone is pretty bright and colorful. And in all honesty, the custom OS from Vivo and I have something of a love-hate relationship. I absolutely loathe the iOS-like treatment of the quick toggles and the notification shade. I had a hard time swiping up to get to the wi-fi toggles. It is kind of frustrating that Vivo is still using this layout over the stock Android guidelines.
Speaking of which, I love that Vivo has a custom icon pack. The colorful icon makes the whole UI look bright and fun. It suits my taste of having an eye-popping vibrant interface. Absolutely love it! That being said, there definitely is more hate than love with the UI. Vivo needs to fix the UI pronto! Maybe with a software update, like right now.
Camera
The Vivo V15 Pro is all about the camera! It has an industry first (in the premium mid-tier) pop up selfie camera. Yes, you heard it right! Vivo has brought the pop-up mechanism from its flagship, the Nex S, to the V15 Pro. I mean, how cool is that?
Not just the looks but the camera quality itself is amazing. I was figuratively blown by it! The f/2.0 32MP motorized front-camera takes some amazing selfies. Even in low-light, the shooter took some amazing photos. Really impressed!
The phone also comes with a triple-rear camera set up at the back. It is made by an f/1.8 48MP main sensor, f/2.2 8MP ultra-wide sensor, and an f/2.4 5MP depth sensor. This combo makes for quite a photography experience. The three sensors work in conjunction to produce some amazing pictures. Photos taken from the camera are eye-catching with great details, depth, and vibrancy. Low-light images, just like its counterpart, is pretty great with a minimal amount of grain and softness. Overall, the cameras are amazing performers especially considering the price of the phone.
Biometrics and Others
The Vivo V15 Pro packs an under-display fingerprint scanner which is pretty great. Just like many under-glass sensors, this one too is an optical sensor rather than an ultrasonic one. For the most part, the scanner is accurate and fast. Other Biometrics options include a face unlock mechanism which works great as well. The phone uses its pop-up camera to quickly scan the face and unlock.
Battery
The phone packs a 3700mAh non-user removable battery. Battery life on the V15 Pro has been great! I was able to get 5-6 hours of on-screen time with my medium to heavy usage of the phone. Moderate users will easily be able to get a full day worth of battery life out of this device. That said, one major drawback with the phone is the lack of a USB Type-C port. Vivo instead of opting for the new standard has decided to go old school, which is quite a bummer.
To make up for that Vivo has added in a fast charger out of the box. You can get 24% charge within 15 minutes with the included 18W Fast Charger.
Verdict: Vivo V15 Pro Review
The Vivo V15 Pro is an amazing smartphone with the latest innovations in tech. It packs an edge-to-edge display, a pop-up selfie camera, a triple rear camera, and an in-display fingerprint scanner. All great inclusions for the price! That said, Vivo does make some sacrifice in the form of the build and charging port. I would have loved to see a glass body with a USB Type-C port on the phone.
Overall, the Vivo V15 Pro is a great smartphone that has a lot to offer. It brings all the latest innovations in the smartphone realm and packs it into an affordable package. For anyone looking to get a unique smartphone in 2019, the Vivo V15 Pro will suffice your needs. A great offering!
