About the Xiaomi Black Shark

Design and build

The Black Shark has a dimension of  161.6 x 75.4 x 5.1mm-9.25mm and weighs 190 grams. This is a bit thicker and bulkier than other Android smartphones! The device has rounded corners with green chamfered edges at the top as well as the back like that of Razor. At the back, the horizontally aligned camera is accompanied by matte finished curved panels that are pretty solid and sturdy. This makes the phone comfortable to grip and less slippery. The device also has thick bezels on the chin of the front which is reasonable for players to have some space for the convenient gameplay and finger placements.

The back has the shark logo branding which lights up in a neon-green color giving an immersive gaming experience. Also, the inclusion of smart X-shaped antenna bands deceptively gives an appealing look to the device. Xiaomi boasts that the device is compatible with 5G network carrier and handles speed with ease. Xiaomi also announced an additional accessory for the device- a detachable gamepad which the users can use as an analog joystick for gameplay. The fingerprint sensor is overlayed on top of the home button.

Performance

The performance of the device will be top-notch as it is equipped with the latest Snapdragon 845 SOC coupled with the Adreno 630 GPU. The phone comes in two variants 6 GB RAM/64 GB ROM and 8 GB RAM/128GB ROM options. Xiaomi also has incorporated the multi-core AI engine to boost the performance by efficiently allocating the tasks and utilizing memory resources. Likewise, the support for DCI-P3, video HDR, and MEMC intelligent motion compensation technology adds a competitive edge to the device.

Gamers don’t need to worry about the heating issues while playing intense graphical games such as Fortnight, PUBG as the device incorporates an integrated multi-layered cooling system. It comprises of four different components, namely heat module, liquid cooling, heat sink, and multi-layer graphite. So the gamers are going to experience lag-free gaming experience without any heating issues even at longer gaming sessions.

Camera

The shark sports dual camera setup with a primary camera being 12 MP and a secondary camera of 20 MP. Both the camera features an aperture of same size f/1.75 with a pixel size of 1.25 micron for the primary camera and 1.0 micron for the secondary camera. The front camera houses a 20 MP selfie shooter that has an aperture of f/2.2 which Xiaomi boasts to have 4K recording capability. The rear camera offers some incredible features such as Phase-detection autofocus, 4K capture, HDR, and Portrait Mode.

Display

Xiaomi has disappointed users in the display section as it offers only a 5.99-inch display with a Full HD+ resolution with 18:9 aspect ratio. A 2k resolution panel would have been excellent for a gaming phone! Nevertheless, the incorporation of MEMC intelligent motion compensation technology ensures buttery smooth video playback and animations. The refresh rate of the display is at 60 Hz which is quite low in comparison to Razor but still doesn’t leave any space for users to raise a complaint.

Battery, software, and connectivity

The shark packs a massive battery of 4000 mAh lithium ion battery with USB type-C connectivity and support for Qualcomm quick charge 3.0. There’s no micro SD card slot expansion and headphone jack on the device which is a bit odd for gamers. The latest Bluetooth version 5.0 on this device would certainly cherish the gamers. The device runs on Android Oreo with a bit of tweak on UI interface as the device is layered with JOY UI, not typical MIUI setup and also themed black to give some appealing gaming look.

Audio

There’s a single bottom firing speaker backed by a Hi-Fi audio quality. The earpiece speaker can function as stereo speakers whenever it’s not in use. There’s dedicated microphone beneath the display along speaker grills for quality sound recording.

Verdict: Xiaomi Black Shark

Xiaomi is getting its hands-on plethora of gadgets available in the market in order to soon establish itself as a global leader among tech companies. And gaming smartphones at this level of masterpiece surely position the company ahead of other tech giants.
