Xiaomi’s flagship for 2018 is expected to make an appearance at the company’s annual product launch in Shenzhen on May 31. As Xiaomi’s 8th anniversary approaches, there are many speculations that the brand may skip the Mi 7 moniker and instead opt for naming its next flagship the Mi 8. It’s speculated that the company may launch the much-rumored Mi 7, which could rather be the Mi 8, as Xiaomi’s 8th Anniversary edition. However, a few rumors also state that Xiaomi will rather launch two new phones. The Mi 7 and something that could be a remembrance of the company’s 8th-Anniversary.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Rumor Round-up

In a post on Chinese portal Sina on Friday, a 3-second video appears to show a brief look at the upcoming Mi 8. The video reveals the date on the smartphone to be May 18, indicating that it is part of a recent leak. Xiaomi’s next flagship is expected to sport an in-display fingerprint sensor and a 3D facial recognition sensor. A small clip of just 3 seconds not only confirms scanner but also reveals the front design.

From the look of the things, it seems like the device is running on the MIUI 9. The user puts his fingerprint on the display. Then the scanner lightens up and then unlocks the device in a blink of a second. Also, it is important to mention the scanner speed is way faster than the one we have seen on Vivo’s X-lineup of smartphones. At the moment it is still in the dark whether Xiaomi is using the in-glass scanner from Goodix or Synaptics. As it is not from an official source, we recommend you to take it with a grain of salt.

Apart from in-glass fingerprint scanner the Mi 8 is rumored to be a first Android smartphone with a 3D facial recognition feature similar to the iPhone X. Recently an alleged 3D facial scanner module also leaked online, which the phone could pack. The next-gen scanner 3D scanner maps the user face points to identify the user. This makes it way more secure than ordinary face scanners! Xiaomi might incorporate this scanner in a notch pretty much similar to the iPhone X.

In a separate set of leaks, earlier this week, the retail box of the Xiaomi Mi 8 was seen. The box sports a large ‘8’ logo on top and regular “Mi” branding alongside it.
