Xiaomi‘s Redmi series has been one of its most successful product range. The Redmi 4A is perhaps the cheapest and most successful smartphone under the series but the Note models have carved a niche for themselves globally. Recently, Xiaomi added the Redmi Note 5 to the lineup and it really hasn’t been a disappointment in any aspect.

Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 in India on the 14th of February. The smartphone is the successor to Xiaomi’s best selling smartphone, the Redmi Note 4. While many believe the Redmi Note 5 Pro should have been the Redmi Note 5 in India, the true Redmi Note 4 successor has been launched in China on the 16th of March. It is similar to the Redmi Note 5 Pro but, with some better features and camera upgrades.

Vatsal Impex Pvt Ltd, one of the official distributors for Xiaomi products in Nepal has announced that they are going to take pre-orders of Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 AI from 20th of May. However, Mi Nepal (Vatsal Impex) is still tranquil on the price of the smartphone.

This name Redmi Note 5 AI is a mouthful, and it seems a bit odd Xiaomi decided to rebrand it for China. Other than the name change, the device also comes with a slightly different main camera setup, and some other differences compared to the Indian variant.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 AI vs Redmi Note 5 Pro

Let’s talk about what’s different first. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 AI Dual Camera has two cameras on the back, a 12MP, and a 5MP snappers. The secondary 5MP camera remains unaffected with the same f/2.0 aperture. The primary camera is still 12MP but it now comes with an f/1.9 aperture compared to f/2.2 on the Indian variant. The sensor size is also increased to something in a pixel size of 1.4µm compared to1.25µm on the Indian variant. A larger sensor plus a wider aperture means the Chinese variant should be able to capture better images under the low light and also have a shallower depth of field, in theory at least.

The phone’s front-facing camera is also different compared to the Indian variant of Redmi Note 5 with a 13MP front snapper. This new handset features a dual pixel phase detection autofocus, which the Indian model doesn’t come with. The Redmi Note 5 AI comes with Android 8.1 Oreo which is a plus point as the Indian variant is still on Nougat. On top of everything, the Redmi Note 5 AI has support for Dual 4G VoLTE for both of its SIM cards, and that also was not included in the Redmi Note 5 Pro.
